Synopsis (short abstract)

The ESTRRA Baseline Study Report 2026 provides a comprehensive assessment of the socio-economic, agricultural, environmental, and institutional conditions of smallholder farming communities across seven Local Government Areas in Northern Bauchi State. Covering 1,508 households, farmer groups, community-based seed organisations, fruit forest operators, and farmers’ hubs, the study establishes the baseline against which the Empowerment of Smallholders to Thrive and Build Climate Resilience through Regenerative Agriculture (ESTRRA) Project will measure its impact.

The findings reveal significant challenges, including climate-related crop losses, land degradation, low adoption of climate-smart agriculture, limited access to improved seeds, weak post-harvest management systems, and persistent gender inequalities. More than 80% of farmers reported declining yields, while most community seed organisations remain informal and lack access to financial services, training, and certification systems.

Despite these challenges, the study highlights substantial opportunities. A youthful farming population, growing interest in climate-smart agriculture, existing farmer networks, community seed systems, and agroforestry initiatives provide a strong foundation for sustainable agricultural transformation. The report underscores the need for regenerative agriculture, climate resilience building, institutional strengthening, women’s economic empowerment, and improved market systems to enhance productivity, incomes, and food security across Northern Bauchi.
