Synopsis (short abstract)

This report presents findings from the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions’ Farmers’ Hub Value Chain and Processing Needs Assessment, conducted in September 2026 across selected farming communities in Ebonyi, Edo, Kogi and Niger States, Nigeria.

Drawing on 11 focus group discussions involving 213 farmers across 10 communities, the assessment examines the challenges smallholder farmers face across agricultural production, input access, post-harvest management, processing, storage, finance and market access.

The findings highlight persistent constraints, including the high cost of agricultural inputs, limited access to extension services, post-harvest losses, expensive processing services, inadequate storage facilities and weak market connections. The report also identifies farmers’ preferred services for Farmers’ Hubs, including input shops, cassava processing machines, rice mills, financial service points and produce aggregation facilities.

By examining differences in farmers’ needs across locations and value chains, the assessment provides evidence to guide Farmers’ Hub service design, investment priorities and the development of more accessible agricultural service platforms.
