Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we recognise the incredible contributions of women in every aspect of our lives, especially in agriculture.
Women are the backbone of smallholder farming, producing up to 70% of the food we consume. Their impact is undeniable. Yet, despite their vital role, women farmers face immense challenges — limited access to finance, restricted land ownership, and inadequate training in modern agribusiness. These barriers prevent them from reaching their full potential.
In a country like ours battling food insecurity and rural poverty, empowering women farmers is not just important — it is essential. When women thrive, families thrive. Communities grow. Nations prosper.
At our Foundation, we are committed to changing the narrative. We prioritise women’s empowerment, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2024 alone, we supported 6,901 female farmers across 12 Nigerian states — providing them with access to improved seed varieties, quality farming inputs, market linkage, climate-smart agricultural training and more through our 54 Farmers’ Hubs.
Beyond farming, we are investing in female agripreneurs. We have empowered 15 women to manage these farmers’ hubs, giving them access to building facilities, processing machineries, greenhouses, and professional networks. In Abuja, 100% of our farmer hubs are led by female agripreneurs. And across our initiatives, 36% of all jobs created through our hubs have gone to women.
We don’t just talk about gender equality — we take action. But we know there is more to be done.
This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a call to do more, and do it now. With greater support for proven programmes like ours, we can scale our impact, transform more lives, and drive real change.
Imagine a world where women can farm, lead and achieve all their dreams. By investing in women farmers, we are fighting food insecurity. We are reducing poverty. We are securing a better future for all.
Together, let’s accelerate action for a more equal, prosperous, and food-secure Nigeria.
Happy International Women’s Day!
