FSSS Crowned Champion of Seed Sector Development at Seed Connect Africa 2024

PRESS RELEASE | Abuja, Nigeria – November 2024

The Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) has been recognised as the Champion of Seed Sector Development by the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) during the 7th Edition of Seed Connect Africa 2024, held from 26–27 November at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

The prestigious award recognises FSSS’s outstanding contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s seed sector through innovative approaches that improve smallholder farmers’ access to certified seeds, agricultural technologies and extension services.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Foundation, FSSS Country Team Lead, Timothy Azakere, described the recognition as a reflection of the collective efforts of the organisation, its partners and supporters.

“This award is a powerful testament to the hard work and dedication of our incredible team, and to the unwavering support of our partners and donors. Together, we’re making strides towards a future where smallholder farming drives lasting prosperity. Thank you for believing in our mission. Let’s keep growing, together.”

Over the years, FSSS has established itself as a leading organisation in agricultural development through programmes designed to bridge the gap between research, seed companies and farmers. Through strategic partnerships and innovative delivery models, the Foundation has supported thousands of farmers with access to quality seeds, improved agronomic knowledge and market opportunities.

One of the Foundation’s flagship interventions, the Farmers Hub Programme, has expanded access to agricultural inputs and advisory services in underserved rural communities. By creating direct links between seed companies and farmers, the programme has helped increase the availability and adoption of improved seed varieties across several states.

FSSS also plays a key role in facilitating the dissemination of improved seed technologies through collaborative initiatives such as the AVISA Programme, working closely with NASC, research institutions and private-sector partners to promote agricultural productivity and resilience.

The recognition as Champion of Seed Sector Development underscores FSSS’s commitment to advancing sustainable agricultural transformation and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across Nigeria and beyond.

As the Foundation continues to expand its reach and impact, it remains dedicated to fostering innovation, strengthening partnerships and creating opportunities that enable farmers to thrive.
